Make sure your student can name the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom). And that they know that the bigger the denominator, the more pieces the pie is cut into, and hence the smaller the piece size; that is, given two fractions, each with the number one in the numerator, the fraction with the larger denominator represents a smaller piece of the pie (because the pie is cut into more pieces).
